Going to church is a holy experience that demands reverence, respect, and mindfulness. This guide serves as a helpful resource for understanding the various etiquette practices for services at Mainstreet Baptist Church and how we can work together to foster a peaceful, uplifting, and spiritually revitalizing atmosphere.
Punctuality and Seating
Being on time shows respect for the service and other worshippers. Be seated at least five minutes before the service starts. If you come in late, wait for an appropriate time to enter — during a hymn, for example, or before the reading from scripture. Try and seat yourself towards the back so you aren’t too disruptive.
What to Wear
Although Mainstreet Baptist does not have a strict dress code, guests should dress modestly and with respect. Business casual is the rule for dress. Do not wear things too casual such as shorts and tank tops, or clothes with rude sayings on them.
Electronic Devices
Set all electronic devices to silent mode before you come into the sanctuary. Some people use the Bible apps/phones/tablets and take notes, but make sure it’s not distracting others. Continue your email, social media and non-worship activities.
Behaviour During Worship
Keep a respectful attitude during the period of worship. Join in congregational things like standing on hymns, talking in responsive readings, and listening hard to the sermon. No excessive talking or eating or drinking during the service.
Have Kids With You in Church
Mainstreet Baptist is pleased to have kids with us now and any time! Church is the house of the Lord and if your children cannot behave themselves, it is the decision of the church to not allow them. If a child gets a bit rambunctious, please leave the sanctuary for a moment. The church also offers a nursery for young age children if necessary.
Offerings
When the collection plate is passed, contribute as you feel led. If you cannot contribute financially, simply pass the plate to the next person. Remember, your presence and participation are valued regardless of financial contributions.
Communion
Mainstreet Baptist practices open communion, welcoming all believers to participate. Approach the communion table reverently when invited. If you choose not to participate, remain seated quietly and respectfully.
Greeting Time
Many services include a time of greeting. Use this opportunity to welcome those around you warmly but briefly. Be mindful of personal space and respect those who may prefer minimal physical contact.
After the Service
Conversation is welcome after the service, but remember that some may want to pray silently or reflect. Keep chatter down to a dull roar, and if you want to spread out, go to the designated fellowship areas if there are any.
Respect the Church Property
Be mindful of the church building and its contents. Ask parishioners and others to responsibly discard waste, including used bulletins or communion cups. If you see any damage or anything that seems out of sorts, please let a church staff member or usher know.
Philography and Recording
Do not take photographs or record during the service unless for special events where photographer permission means otherwise. Practically, this helps keep a focused, reverent atmosphere and respects fellow worshippers’ privacy. We affirm the aforementioned values through these guidelines to foster a safe, dignified, and spiritually uplifting association with Mainstreet Baptist Church. The fundamentals of etiquette rest in consideration for others, and respect for the worship experience.
